Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013:

On 1 July 2020, the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) came into effect and governs the processing of personal information by public and private bodies across the board.

The purpose of the act is to balance a person’s right to privacy which is enshrined in the South African Constitution against the right to have access to information.  The Act achieves this by regulating processing activities and by placing obligations on the persons / entities processing personal information.

The act allows you to object to the processing of personal information or you may request for correction or deletion of the personal information, in terms of paragraphs 11 and 24 of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.
