The South African citrus industry says the move has been made to mitigate the risk of citrus black spot interceptions

The Citrus Growers’ Association of South Africa (CGA) and the Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum Boards have voluntarily closed exports of Valencia oranges from the country’s citrus black spot (CBS) affected regions to the European Union.

The suspension, effective from 16 September, comes at a time when the CGA has admitted that the events of the season posed a major threat to the sustainability and profitability of the sector.
