This update – the 87th of its kind – contains a consolidated overview of the South African supply chain and the current state of international trade. Newly reported COVID-19 infections continue to rise rapidly, averaging approximately 7 566 per day (↑54% against last week’s average of 4 922). South Africa has recorded 3,87 million positive cases, with the death toll up to 100 630 this week (up by 223). Despite massive increases in cases, it must be said that the fatalities have fortunately not followed the trend presented by the previous waves. Nevertheless, it remains clear that we are a long way from eradicating the virus. Globally, the case tally stands at 520 million infected by COVID-19, with 6,26 million deaths recorded. Around 11,69 billion vaccine doses have been administered globally, with the South African count at 35,3 million.
